Application of Surfactant in Electroplating

Surfactant is one of the important raw materials in the field of metal surface treatment, and it is also one of the indispensable components of most electroplating additives. In the entire process of electroplating, such as chemical degreasing before plating, pickling and rust removal, electrolytic degreasing, matrix activation to single metal in electroplating, additives for alloy plating, post-plating anti-plating layer discoloration agent, plating protective film It is almost always used in electroplating wastewater treatment. A wide range of applications benefit from the special chemical structure of surfactants and the resulting special properties.
①The addition of surfactants reduces the surface tension of the electroplating solution, making it easier for the cathode electrodeposition process to accompany the hydrogen evolution process. It prevents dents, pitting and pinholes in the plating layer, so that the plating layer has a good bonding force with the substrate.
②The aqueous solution of surfactant is adsorbed on the solid surface stained with greasy dirt, so that the greasy dirt on the solid surface wets, penetrates, emulsifies, and disperses, thereby removing the greasy dirt.
③Surfactants have hydrophilic groups and hydrophobic groups. The directional adsorption of the hydrophobic groups on the electrode interface forms an electric double layer, which often increases the overpotential of the electrode reaction and increases the polarization of the electrodeposition process. The crystallization of the coating is refined, and the internal stress, hardness, ductility and other mechanical and physical properties of the coating are changed.
④The directional adsorption of surfactants on the gas/liquid interface forms a dense surface liquid film, and the foaming effect of some surfactants forms a foam layer, which prevents the escape of acid mist.
The solubilizing and dispersing properties of surfactants help certain water-insoluble main brightener molecules to disperse in the solution, and the synergistic effect between them can obtain a bright, good leveling coating.
Certain cationic surfactants positively charge the solid particles in the plating solution and form a protective film on the surface of the particles, which reduces the surface tension of the solid particles and effectively prevents the solid particles from agglomerating in the solution to make the solid particles. The particles are uniformly dispersed in the solution, and evenly embedded in the coating with the electrodeposition of the metal, to achieve the purpose of composite electroplating and give the coating special functional applications.
